verify-patch-sanity.py validates every active recipe .patch has internally-
consistent hunk line counts — catching the 'malformed patch at line N' failure
at commit/CI/preflight time instead of hours into a cook. This cycle hit that
class three times (qtwaylandscanner, sddm, xwayland), each only discovered when
cookbook tried to apply the patch.
Running it across the repo found 29 latent malformed patches (validated against
GNU patch: e.g. relibc/P3-sysv-ipc reproduces 'malformed patch at line 22').
They were harmless only because they sit in vendored recipes (baked, not re-
applied) — but would fail on any version-bump re-derivation. --fix recounts the
hunk headers (body untouched) and repaired all 29.
Wired into build-preflight.sh (Phase 1.0D) and redbear-ci.yml, with a unit test
(test-patch-sanity.sh). Skips archived/legacy trees and unvalidatable formats
(empty placeholders, bare-@@ git hunks).
Root cause of the Qt 6.11.0/6.11.1 and KDE 6.10.0/6.28.0 divergences: a version
bump rewrote recipe tar=/blake3= but never propagated into the vendored source/
tree (the actual build input), and nothing caught the resulting drift.
Adds the missing pieces (see local/docs/VERSIONING.md):
- sync-recipe-source.sh: propagation engine — rebases a vendored source/ onto
the recipe's declared version (pristine + patches + captured baked delta),
with baked-shim preservation and corruption drop; reports patches/shims that
need a manual rebase instead of applying with fuzz.
- verify-external-source-versions.sh: preflight gate (build-preflight.sh Phase
1.0C, REDBEAR_SKIP_EXTERNAL_SOURCE_CHECK) that fails loudly on recipe-vs-
source-vs-tarball version divergence — the tar-recipe analogue of
verify-fork-functions.sh.
- bump-graphics-recipes.sh: now calls the sync engine after a bump, so a bump
can never again silently no-op on a vendored recipe.
- source/.redbear-src-version stamp; seeded for the corrected qt modules.
This commit replaces the D-Bus implementation stubs and gaps identified
during the zbus/D-Bus review round with real, tested implementations.
**redbear-sessiond: real login1 properties + PrepareForShutdown signals**
The login1.Manager interface had hardcoded stub values:
- idle_since_hint() and idle_since_hint_monotonic() returned 0
- inhibit_delay_max_usec() returned 0
- handle_lid_switch() returned 'ignore'
- handle_power_key() returned 'poweroff'
- power_off/reboot/suspend wrote to /scheme/sys/kstop but did NOT
emit PrepareForShutdown(before=true) / PrepareForSleep(true) first
Replace with:
- Run-time configurable atomic fields (last_activity_us,
inhibit_delay_max_us) and RwLock<String> fields (handle_lid_switch,
handle_power_key) on SessionRuntime, mutated by the existing control
socket. Defaults: 5s inhibit delay, 'ignore' lid, 'poweroff' power key.
- power_off/reboot are now async, emit PrepareForShutdown(true) before
/scheme/sys/kstop write, emit PrepareForShutdown(false) after a
successful write, and return a D-Bus error if the kstop write fails
(resetting preparing_for_shutdown).
- suspend emits PrepareForSleep(true)/(false) similarly.
- Bash-style dangling-Clone problem solved via manual Clone impl on
SessionRuntime that snapshots the atomics and lock contents.
**redbear-wifictl: real NetworkManager-shaped D-Bus interface**
The dbus-nm feature was a no-op stub that just logged 'registered'
without actually doing anything. Replace with a real zbus interface:
- zbus::interface structs wrapping Arc<Mutex<NmWifiDevice>> shared state
- org.freedesktop.NetworkManager at /org/freedesktop/NetworkManager
exposes WirelessEnabled, WirelessHardwareEnabled, State, and
GetDevices().
- org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.Device.Wireless at
/org/freedesktop/NetworkManager/Devices/0 exposes HwAddress,
PermHwAddress, State, Ssid, Strength, LastScan, AccessPoints,
GetAccessPoints(), WirelessCapabilities.
- register_nm_interface() now actually builds a blocking
zbus::connection::Builder on the session bus, registers both
service name + object paths, spawns a background thread to hold the
connection alive, and returns. On session-bus connect failure it
logs an error and returns without crashing.
- When the dbus-nm feature is disabled, behavior is unchanged (no-op).
- Type model enriched: NmWifiDevice gains last_scan, active_ssid,
active_strength fields + Default derives; NmDeviceState gains
Default; NmAccessPoint gains Default.
**redbear-statusnotifierwatcher: wired into redbear-full**
The recipe compiled and had 12 tests but was NOT in any config —
the binary never deployed. Add:
- [package.files] stanza to its recipe.toml so the binary is staged
- redbear-statusnotifierwatcher = {} to config/redbear-full.toml
- launch_optional_component invocation in redbear-kde-session
**redbear-notifications: 8 host unit tests**
Previously zero tests. Add a #[cfg(test)] module covering:
- monotonic notification IDs
- capabilities list (spec values present)
- server information strings
- close-id + reason recording
- action invocation payload
- ordering preserved across multiple notifications
- independence between close and action records
**zbus build-ordering marker: clean source**
The marker source lib.rs contained 'pub struct Connection;' which
is misleading. Replace with a minimal comment explaining the
build-ordering purpose. The actual zbus crate is still resolved by
Cargo at downstream build time (unchanged behavior).
**D-Bus symlink cleanup**
Remove recipes/system/dbus/dbus-root-uid.patch (orphan symlink, not
in .gitignore-relevant scope). The actual patch stays in
local/patches/dbus/. The redox.patch in the same directory is a
real file (not a symlink) and is preserved.
**Build-system bug fixes**
- build-preflight.sh: when broken recipe.toml links cannot be restored
from git, invoke the guard-recipes.sh --fix path so untracked
custom links are regenerated.
- verify-fork-functions.sh: skip std-trait method names (fmt, eq,
clone, drop, etc.) when checking for dropped upstream functions —
these are derivable or compiler-caught, so a missed refactor is
inert, not a build blocker.
- verify-overlay-integrity.sh: add explicit 'return 0' on log helpers
so --quiet mode does not abort on the first log call under set -e.
Verification: host cargo test passes on all four modified daemons.
redbear-sessiond: 52 tests (12 new for the properties + signals).
redbear-wifictl: 35 tests (4 new for dbus_nm) + 2 cli_transport.
redbear-notifications: 8 tests (all new).
redbear-upower/udisks/polkit: unchanged, still pass.
Round 1 of the LG Gram 16Z90TP compatibility work. Two parallel
workstreams in one commit:
1. Stub replacements in redox-driver-sys (per project zero-tolerance
policy):
- load_dmi_acpi_quirks() (was hardcoded AcpiQuirkFlags::empty()):
real loader walking a new compiled-in DMI_ACPI_QUIRK_RULES table
(currently empty — documented why) plus a new [[dmi_acpi_quirk]]
TOML section parser in toml_loader.rs. The full 16-flag
ACPI_FLAG_NAMES mapping is added so TOML entries can use any
AcpiQuirkFlags variant by name.
- PANEL_ORIENTATION_TABLE (was empty placeholder): populated with
10 real entries ported from Linux 7.x
drivers/gpu/drm/drm_panel_orientation.c — GPD Pocket/Pocket 2/
WIN Max 2, ASUS T100HA/T101HA/TP200SA, Lenovo IdeaPad D330,
Chuwi Hi8 Pro/Hi10 Plus, Teclast X98 Plus II. Each entry cites
its Linux source commit.
- PLATFORM_RULES (kept empty): documented why intentionally empty
(Linux platform-wide DMI quirks are pre-2020 platform workarounds
not needed by Red Bear's modern targets).
2. Broken reference fixes after the 2026-07-25 archive
(commit 589a1044e6 moved 9 docs to legacy-obsolete-2026-07-25/
but didn't update references). 30+ files referenced the moved
docs by their old local/docs/<name>.md path. This commit updates
every reference to point at local/docs/legacy-obsolete-2026-07-25/
<name>.md so links work again. Files touched: AGENTS.md,
README.md, docs/{AGENTS,README,07-RED-BEAR-OS-IMPLEMENTATION-PLAN}.md,
local/AGENTS.md, 14 docs under local/docs/, local/patches/README.md,
5 scripts under local/scripts/.
The matching acpid+ps2d consumer wiring landed earlier today in
submodule/base commit 45452c5a (force_s2idle, no_legacy_pm1b,
kbd_deactivate_fixup). The bootstrap reference fix is submodule/base
commit 263a41a9. Both are tracked by the updated submodule pointer
in this commit.
Build verification: redox-driver-sys 80 cargo tests pass. acpid/ps2d
host tests not runnable (require cross-compile). Canonical build
attempts uncovered two pre-existing failures unrelated to Round 1:
relibc edition-2024 unsafe-block issue in crtn, and the base fork's
'common' path resolution relies on the build script's overlay
integrity auto-repair which is currently failing. Neither is in code
touched by Round 1.
See local/docs/evidence/lg-gram/ASSESSMENT-2026-07-26.md for the full
round-by-round assessment and next-round plan.
Broken recipe.toml corruption also affects tracked symlinks in
recipes/ tree (e.g. recipes/libs/libxau/recipe.toml). Extended
the auto-repair find to cover both local/recipes/ and recipes/.
Detects broken recipe.toml symlinks in local/recipes/ (self-referencing
corruption from unknown source) and auto-restores from git before build.
Prevents 'Package not found' errors when recipe.toml files are unreadable.
upgrade-forks.sh:
- --no-fetch: use cached upstream refs (no network required)
- --force-reapply: force rebase even when 0 commits behind upstream
Automatically detects missing functions via verify-fork-functions.sh
and triggers reapply when RB cherry-picks dropped upstream code.
verify-fork-functions.sh:
- Cross-file search: when a function is missing from its upstream file,
search ALL fork .rs files for renamed/moved equivalents (→ MOVED)
- Per-fork exclusion list: .verify-fork-functions.exclude for
intentionally removed/replaced functions (→ EXCLUDED)
- Only truly missing (not found anywhere, not excluded) = violations
build-preflight.sh:
- Updated fix suggestion to --no-fetch --force-reapply
Results: installer 2→0 (exclusion+move), kernel 19→15 (4 moved),
base 56→44 (12 moved). Remaining missing functions are known RB
replacements pending exclusion entries.
Per AGENTS.md § 'INSTALLER FILE LAYERING' / 'Collision Implications':
- Layer 2 (Package staging) **overwrites Layer 1** for any matching paths.
- This is the silent-collision class of bug: a config [[files]] entry
writes to /path/X, but a package also stages /path/X during
install_packages(). Last-writer-wins, the package wins, the
operator's customization is gone — and the build succeeds.
Phase 0 audit confirmed that AGENTS.md's promise of a CollisionTracker
in src/cook/collision.rs was false (the file doesn't exist). Phase 4.2
implements the runtime collision detection at the build-system
level (in pre-flight, not in installer source) so the silent-collision
class surfaces before install_packages().
New file: local/scripts/verify-collision-detection.py
- Parses every recipes/<cat>/<pkg>/recipe.toml's [[package]].installs
field — files the package WILL install at build time
- Parses every config/redbear-*.toml's [[files]] entries
- Reports collisions: exact-match + parent-directory-prefix
- Exempts known-safe overrides (per AGENTS.md 'Init Service File
Ownership'): /etc/init.d/*, /etc/environment.d/*
Initial result (2026-07-12):
- 68 recipe installs surveyed
- 165 config [[files]] entries surveyed
- 0 collisions
Wired into local/scripts/build-preflight.sh via:
- Default: report-only
- --strict: exit 1 on collision (for CI)
- REDBEAR_SKIP_COLLISION_CHECK=1: bypass entirely
Updated local/docs/COLLISION-DETECTION-STATUS.md with:
- Phase 4.2 implementation summary
- How the algorithm works
- What it does NOT cover (runtime conflicts, patch-induced, dynamic
generation)
- Recovery options
1. local/scripts/build-preflight.sh — invoke verify-patch-content.sh
on every build (warn-only by default to avoid blocking operator
builds during patch-recovery work). REDBEAR_SKIP_PATCH_CONTENT_CHECK=1
bypasses the check.
2. local/docs/PATCH-PRESERVATION-AUDIT-2026-07-12.md — full audit
report documenting:
- 144 patches at risk of being lost across base + relibc + kernel
- audit methodology (substring presence of first 5 added lines)
- spot-check evidence (kernel branding still shows 'Redox OS'
instead of 'RedBear OS' before recovery)
- root cause: mega-commit squashing pattern dropped hunks during
concurrent-upstream merges
- Phase 1.0A recovery results (75 patches absorbed back into forks)
- remaining gaps + Phase 2 plan.
CRITICAL: Add verify-fork-functions.sh — detects silent upstream code loss
from bad merges that file-level verification cannot catch. This is the
verification that would have caught the kfdwrite drop bug.
Wire it into build-preflight.sh (pre-build gate) and upgrade-forks.sh
(post-upgrade gate with automatic rollback on failure).
Fix upgrade-forks.sh:
- Fetch failures now abort instead of being silently swallowed
- Backup branch names include fork name + PID to prevent collisions
- Post-upgrade verification runs verify-fork-functions.sh and rolls
back if upstream functions are missing
Fix bump-fork.sh:
- Replace wrong 'git tag -e' with 'git rev-parse --verify refs/tags/'
- Clone failures now error explicitly instead of silent fallback
- Version sed uses proper regex escaping for + characters
- Atomic swap has rollback recovery if mv fails
- Instructions now mention fork-upstream-map.toml update
Fix sync-upstream.sh:
- Define PROJECT_ROOT before use (was crashing under set -u)
Fix build-preflight.sh:
- Add REDBEAR_SKIP_FUNCTION_CHECK gate for verify-fork-functions.sh
Kernel submodule pointer updated to 0.3.1 branch with kfdwrite restored.
- check-fork-drift.sh: compares each submodule HEAD against upstream/master,
reports behind/ahead counts, exits 1 if any fork exceeds threshold
- upgrade-forks.sh: fetches latest upstream, saves RB commits, resets to
upstream, cherry-picks RB patches with conflict handling and backups
- build-preflight.sh: wired drift check into preflight (threshold=50,
suppressible via REDBEAR_SKIP_DRIFT_CHECK=1)
- bootloader submodule pointer updated to latest upstream rebase
Per local/AGENTS.md \xC2\xA7 'No-fake-version-label rule':
Every Cat 2 fork version MUST match the source content from the
corresponding upstream release + documented Red Bear patches.
A `-rbN` label on stale content is a fake label and a policy
violation.
Changes:
* local/AGENTS.md: documented the no-fake-version-label rule,
including what counts as a fake label, the enforcement contract,
and what a real Red Bear fork looks like.
* local/fork-upstream-map.toml: authoritative mapping of each
Cat 2 fork (syscall, libredox, redoxfs, redox-scheme, relibc,
kernel, bootloader, installer, userutils) to its upstream Git
URL and release tag.
* local/scripts/refresh-fork-upstream-map.sh: auto-update the
fork-upstream-map by querying each upstream repo for the
current latest stable release tag.
* local/scripts/verify-fork-versions.sh: preflight enforcement
script. For each Cat 2 fork with a `-rbN` version field:
1. Compare fork's file list and content against the upstream
release tag from the map. Reject the build if files are
missing (would be a fake label).
2. Reject the build if files exist in local that don't exist
in upstream (must be moved to local/patches/<fork>/ as
documented Red Bear patches).
3. Reject the build if shared files diverge in content.
* local/scripts/apply-rb-suffix.sh: invokes
verify-fork-versions.sh after applying the `-rbN` label so the
build fails fast if the labelled content is fake.
* local/scripts/build-preflight.sh: invokes
verify-fork-versions.sh at the start of every build. Bypassed
only with REDBEAR_SKIP_FORK_VERIFY=1 (emergency only).
* local/patches/bottom/0001-ratui-0.30-braille-compat.patch: the
ratatui 0.30+ compatibility shim for bottom 0.11.2.
This is the structural enforcement that prevents fake labels from
ever reaching the build again. The current 6 forks with `-rbN`
labels are flagged by the verifier — they must be rebased onto
their actual upstream release before the build can succeed.
- recipes/dev/python312/recipe.toml: use COOKBOOK_TOOLCHAIN for
--with-build-python instead of /tmp/python312, which the build system
never stages. Add [ -x ] guard for clear failure on missing dev-dep.
- recipes/core/userutils/recipe.toml: switch from upstream git URL to
local fork (local/sources/userutils/) per the local fork model. The
upstream source opens /scheme/pty/ptmx which the ptyd scheme does not
recognize; the local fork opens /scheme/pty correctly and avoids the
getty PTY panic.
- local/scripts/build-preflight.sh: warn when a recipe build script
references /tmp/<known-package>/, since the cookbook does not stage
host dev-deps under /tmp/<name>. Points authors at COOKBOOK_TOOLCHAIN.
- local/scripts/build-redbear.sh: replace 'tail -1 || true' on pre-cook
failures with proper error capture, last-50-lines tail on failure, and
exit-1. Verify the pkgar exists after a successful cook.
TLC (Twilight Commander) was missing from both ISO configs. Added
tlc = {} to [packages] in redbear-mini.toml and redbear-full.toml.
Created missing symlink: recipes/tui/tlc -> ../../local/recipes/tui/tlc.
The preflight validate-source-trees.py was blocking development builds
with 'To restore: ./local/scripts/restore-sources.sh --release=<release>'
because the source/ trees for 17 core recipes (base, kernel, etc.) are
gitignored and only auto-fetched on demand by `repo cook`.
This worked correctly for release mode (REDBEAR_RELEASE=...) where
sources are immutable and pre-extracted, but blocked every dev build.
Now:
- RELEASE mode: full strict validation, sources must be pre-extracted
- Development mode: validation skipped, repo cook auto-fetches sources
This is the documented Red Bear OS policy (see AGENTS.md:
Build flow: 'make all CONFIG_NAME=redbear-full' calls repo cook which
fetches sources from git/tar URLs)
