Phase 10.2: Fix kernel fork upstream tag in fork-upstream-map.toml.
- Kernel fork Cargo.toml claimed '0.5.12+rb0.3.1' tracking
upstream tag 0.5.12 which does not exist remotely.
- Every preflight run showed: 'WARN: kernel: couldn't ls-remote
... tag 0.5.12, skipping content check'
- Verified: fork vs upstream 0.6.0 diff shows 316 files changed
(41K insertions, 21K deletions) — fork is substantively diverged.
- Fix: mark kernel as 'diverged' mode (like bootloader+installer)
tracking 0.6.0 tag. The tag 0.6.0 is the nearest existing tag.
Content check is skipped (diverged mode) — honest about state.
Phase 10.3: Fix AGENTS.md 'partially implemented' claim.
- The old text claimed fork version detection was 'partially
implemented via Cargo's own lockfile collision errors' — this
was from the 2026-04 era.
- Now fully implemented across 5 tools: sync-versions.sh,
verify-fork-versions.sh, verify-patch-content.py, bump-fork.sh,
push-fork-branches.sh. The full tool inventory is in
local/docs/HOOKS.md (10 tools as of Phase 9.2).
After Phase 10.2, verify-fork-versions.sh output changes:
Before: 'WARN: kernel: couldn't ls-remote ... tag 0.5.12'
After: 'WARN: kernel is in diverged mode — content check skipped'
(consistent with bootloader and installer warnings)
Phase 2.0 audit discovered that 144 patches in local/patches/<comp>/
were at risk of being silently lost because the build system did not
distinguish between:
- SUPERSEDED upstream (fork/work covered by upstream or later RB work)
- INTEGRATED via different commit (work IS in fork, different SHA)
- MISSING-UPSTREAM (work genuinely not in fork — needs reapply)
This commit adds an explicit decision tree to AGENTS.md so future
operators know: when verify-patch-content.sh reports an orphan,
the default action is NOT to immediately reapply. The actual
workflow is:
1. Check git log for related commits in the fork
2. Classify the orphan
3. SUPERSEDED/INTEGRATED: move to local/patches/legacy-superseded/
4. MISSING-UPSTREAM only: try patch -p1 --fuzz=5, else mark for
fork rebase (Phase 2.4+)
This codifies the Phase 2.0 lessons so future fork-upgrade runs
don't repeat the silent-loss pattern that originally caused 144
patches to drift out of sync with their fork commits.
The build system had multiple authoritative docs claiming 'Red Bear
OS 0.1.0 (baseline)' and 'branch 0.2.5' long after the working
branch advanced to 0.3.1. Operator confusion was inevitable:
- 'repo --version' showed 0.2.5 (root Cargo.toml drift, fixed G2)
- AGENTS.md said rust-toolchain = nightly-2025-10-03 (actual
nightly-2026-05-24)
- local/AGENTS.md example versions all said 0.2.5 (should be 0.3.1)
- README.md and docs/* claimed 'baseline 0.1.0' on the current
branch (which has 0.3.1 forks as the source of truth)
This commit syncs the docs to reality without rewriting historical
content where the 0.1.0 reference is genuinely about the legacy
release archive at sources/redbear-0.1.0/ (which DOES exist and
serves the release-mode fallback per BUILD-SYSTEM-SETUP).
The 0.1.0 release-archive references are preserved with explicit
'legacy' annotations because that archive IS the durable record
of the old overlay-patch approach and is used by
restore-sources.sh --release=0.1.0 in fallback build paths.
Updated across:
- AGENTS.md (root): toolchain, current baseline phrasing
- local/AGENTS.md: example versions 0.2.5->0.3.1, RELEASE MODEL
clarified that current source-of-truth is local/sources/ forks
- README.md: branch refs 0.2.5->0.3.1
- docs/06-BUILD-SYSTEM-SETUP.md: baseline 0.1.0->0.3.1
- local/docs/UPSTREAM-SYNC-PROCEDURE.md: baseline clarified
- local/docs/LOCAL-FORK-SUPREMACY-POLICY.md: snapshot phrasing
- local/docs/CUB-PACKAGE-MANAGER.md: archive context clarified
Phase 0 stop-the-bleeding fixes:
1. ROOT COOKBOOK VERSION DRIFT (G2)
Cargo.toml was at 0.2.5 while branch is 0.3.1. Now matches.
Added inline comment explaining the sync-versions.sh invariant
to prevent the next fork bump from re-introducing drift.
2. SILENT TODO FALLBACK (G3)
src/cook/package.rs:199 used .unwrap_or("TODO".into()) which
emitted literal "TODO" into pkgar metadata when a recipe had
no parseable version. Now fails fast with a precise error
message that names the offending recipe and suggests a fix.
Replaces silent metadata lie with actionable diagnostic.
3. CARGO.LOCK DRIFT (G1)
After 0.3.0 -> 0.3.1 fork version sync, four Cargo.lock files
were regenerated to match the new +rb0.3.1 suffix:
- root Cargo.lock
- local/sources/libredox/Cargo.lock
- local/sources/userutils/Cargo.lock
- local/sources/base/Cargo.lock (also accumulated bytemuck
and bytemuck_derive patch bumps as a side effect)
- local/sources/bootloader/Cargo.lock
- local/sources/installer/Cargo.lock
Used 'cargo generate-lockfile' per fork with their path-dep
+ [patch.crates-io] config preserved. Verified each lockfile
now contains the correct Cat 2 fork versions matching their
Cargo.toml at +rb0.3.1.
4. BOOTLOADER VERSION OVERSIGHT
local/sources/bootloader/Cargo.toml was still at
1.0.0+rb0.3.0 after sync-versions.sh --check passed for
everything else. Manual fix applied. Also regenerated its
Cargo.lock to match.
5. COLLISION DETECTION HONESTY (G9)
AGENTS.md and local/AGENTS.md claimed a CollisionTracker
module existed in src/cook/collision.rs and was wired
through the installer at runtime. A whole-tree search
confirmed NO such code exists anywhere. Removed the false
promises and linked to local/docs/COLLISION-DETECTION-STATUS.md
which documents the actual current state (lint-config-only
init-service detection works; general package-vs-config
detection does NOT).
Verified:
- bash -n on all touched scripts: clean
- cargo check --bin repo: clean (redbear_cookbook v0.3.1 now)
- sync-versions.sh --check: clean (75 Cat 1 + 10 Cat 2)
- verify-fork-versions.sh: 1 pre-existing FAIL (bootloader
fork genuinely diverges from upstream tag 1.0.0 — out of
scope for Phase 0; documented for Phase 1 upgrade-forks work)
Add comprehensive policy documentation in AGENTS.md covering:
- local/ fork always takes precedence over recipes/ paths
- build system must ensure local fork is at latest available version
- all Red Bear patches must be applied cleanly on top of latest version
- automatic version bump + patch reapplication via bump-fork.sh
Create local/scripts/bump-fork.sh that implements automatic version bumping:
- Detects current local version vs required version from Cargo.lock
- Fetches upstream source at required version
- Applies all Red Bear patches atomically
- Updates version field and replaces local fork contents
Fix driver-manager Cargo.toml lockfile collision:
- Remove redundant syscall dependency (transitive via pcid_interface)
- Update all driver recipes to use local/sources/syscall and libredox paths
- This eliminates the redox_syscall lockfile collision between
local/sources/syscall and recipes/core/base/syscall (same dir, different paths)
relibc: fix unsafe call for Rust 2024 edition compatibility
Replace all non-canonical build invocations (bare 'make all/live
CONFIG_NAME=', 'scripts/build-iso.sh', 'scripts/run.sh') with the
canonical './local/scripts/build-redbear.sh' wrapper.
Updated: AGENTS.md, local/AGENTS.md, README.md, docs/README.md,
docs/06-BUILD-SYSTEM-SETUP.md, and 6 active local/docs plan files.
Archived docs and frozen boot-logs left as-is (historical evidence).
- AGENTS.md: add cache system to STRUCTURE, WHERE TO LOOK, BUILD FLOW,
BUILD COMMANDS (--force-rebuild), and CONVENTIONS (dep_hashes.toml,
binary store restore, package_groups syntax)
- CHANGELOG.md: comprehensive entry for Phase 1-3 + kernel MWAIT +
ninja-build Redox support
- local/AGENTS.md: note installer fork adds package groups support
- BUILD-CACHE-PLAN.md: fix TOML syntax (underscores not hyphens),
update all phases to COMPLETE with implementation details, add cache
flow diagram, add verification results
Add local/scripts/cleanup-build.sh - a git-aware cleanup script that
uses 'git ls-files' to whitelist tracked files before deletion.
Prevents the class of cleanup disasters that deleted local recipe
sources and local fork sources.
Update AGENTS.md with the new safe cleanup procedure.
Update CONSOLE-TO-KDE-DESKTOP-PLAN.md to v5.8 with the qtdeclarative
qfeatures.h fix and the new safe cleanup script.
- Add x11proto to redbear-full.toml package list
- libxau recipe updated with x11proto dependency and custom build script
- Fixes libxau build failure: 'Package xproto was not found'
- Create local/docs/PACKAGE-BUILD-QUIRKS.md: central reference for all
known cross-compilation build issues (DYNAMIC_INIT behavior, m4
CFLAGS/LDFLAGS ordering, ninja-build BUILD_TESTING, general patterns)
- Update UPSTREAM-SYNC-PROCEDURE.md: add m4 LDFLAGS ordering quirk
(must be set AFTER DYNAMIC_INIT), ninja-build BUILD_TESTING=OFF,
DYNAMIC_INIT overwrite behavior, source reversion root cause summary
- Update AGENTS.md: reference PACKAGE-BUILD-QUIRKS.md in WHERE TO LOOK
table, add DYNAMIC_INIT and cross-compilation test conventions
- Fix ninja-build recipe: add cmakeflags=['-DBUILD_TESTING=OFF']
(tests require host gtest which conflicts with Redox sysroot stdlib.h)
Top-level + local docs audit (2026-06-18). Findings and fixes:
1. AGENTS.md CONVENTIONS section — corrected 'my-' prefix contradiction.
The legacy 'my-*' prefix is deprecated and git-ignored. Use 'redbear-*'
for tracked first-class configs.
2. README.md quick-start — promoted 'local/scripts/build-redbear.sh' to
the recommended entry point. Bare 'scripts/run.sh --build' remains as
a secondary path. Added note about build-redbear.sh's policy gates
(.config checking, REDBEAR_ALLOW_PROTECTED_FETCH=1).
3. docs/06-BUILD-SYSTEM-SETUP.md — restructured Building section to put
'build-redbear.sh' first, then 'make all' as legacy/advanced with
clear notes on what gates it bypasses.
4. docs/05-KDE-PLASMA-ON-REDOX.md — replaced 'Stub-only package for
dependency resolution' wording for kirigami. Per project policy
(local/AGENTS.md STUB AND WORKAROUND POLICY — ZERO TOLERANCE),
stubs are forbidden. The kirigami build is blocked at the QML gate;
the recipe is honest and ships no fake/fallback package.
5. local/docs/BUILD-TOOLS-PORTING-PLAN.md — replaced all 'python312'
references with 'python314' (matches V8.3 P0 bump from earlier).
6. local/AGENTS.md — added 'LOCAL RECIPE SOURCE IMMUTABILITY' section
documenting the cb8b093564 guarantee. Any path matching
/local/recipes/ is unconditionally immutable; no env var or flag
can override. REDBEAR_ALLOW_LOCAL_UNFETCH=1 was removed as a kill
switch and is now dead code. distclean-nuclear is now a no-op for
local recipes.
The build was failing at verify-overlay-integrity.sh with:
ERROR: dangling patch symlink: recipes/core/base/redox.patch -> .../local/patches/base/redox.patch
ERROR: missing critical patch: local/patches/base/redox.patch
The mega-patch (100MB+) was gitignored and got lost, while the
dangling symlink at recipes/core/base/ is leftover infrastructure.
The base recipe (recipes/core/base/recipe.toml) does NOT reference
redox.patch - it uses individual P*.patch files (P0-P9). The mega-patch
was abandoned 2026-04-30 in favor of ~100 individual patches.
Changes:
- Remove dangling recipes/core/base/redox.patch symlink
- Update verify-overlay-integrity.sh to drop obsolete references
(redox.patch in base) and consolidate redbear-live-full into the
current critical configs list
- Remove 'local/patches/base/redox.patch' from .gitignore (it is gone
for good; never resurrect the mega-patch approach)
- Document NEVER-GITIGNORE-CRITICAL-INFRASTRUCTURE policy in AGENTS.md
(replaces the obsolete 'Large Patch Files' section that described
the now-removed chunks/reassembly approach)
- Add Linux reference tree migration note (2.1GB tree should eventually
be tracked via sparse submodule or gitea mirror)
5-phase hardening to prevent silent file-layer collisions (the D-Bus
regression class):
Phase 1: lint-config-paths.sh + make lint-config in depends.mk
Phase 2: CollisionTracker in installer (content-hash comparison)
Phase 3: installs manifests in recipe.toml + validate-file-ownership.sh
Phase 4: validate-init-services.sh + make validate in disk.mk
Phase 5: documentation (AGENTS.md, BUILD-SYSTEM-HARDENING-PLAN.md)
Both redbear-mini and redbear-full build and validate clean.
66 declared install paths in base, zero conflicts.
Platform prerequisite status:
- Qt6::Sensors: BUILT (v6.11.0, 520KB pkgar, dummy backend)
- libinput: BUILT (v1.30.2, with libevdev v1.13.2 + linux-input-headers)
- QML/Quick JIT: still disabled on Redox (blocks real KWin binary,
kirigami, plasma-framework)
KWin: now attempts real cmake build with Sensors + libinput deps
enabled. Falls back to redbear-compositor shim on cmake failure
(QML/Quick gate). Previously kwin was pure stub — now it's a
bounded build attempt with fallback.
Enabled in config (new this session):
- qt6-sensors, libevdev, libinput, kdecoration, kf6-kcmutils
Previously OOTB dependencies now resolved:
- libevdev → libinput → KWin real build path opened
- linux-input-headers → libevdev → libinput chain
- qt6-sensors → KWin Sensors dependency satisfied
Enforce that every source-tree edit must be mirrored to local/patches/
and wired into recipe.toml in the same session. Apply the policy
retroactively to userutils res/issue and res/motd (Redox → Red Bear).
Consolidate compile target naming (redbear-live, redbear-grub-live-full,
etc.), add config/redbear-grub-live-full.toml, make redbear-live-full-grub
a legacy alias, update build-iso.sh to support all GRUB live targets, and
sync AGENTS.md/README.md build command documentation.
Consolidate the active desktop path around redbear-full while landing the greeter/session stack and the runtime fixes needed to keep Wayland and KWin bring-up moving forward.
Add channel/band/rate/BSS/RX-TX structures to linux-kpi wireless
scaffolding (mac80211.rs, wireless.rs, net.rs, C headers), extend
redbear-iwlwifi linux_port.c with comprehensive PCIe transport, and
create consolidated CONSOLE-TO-KDE-DESKTOP-PLAN.md as the canonical
desktop path document. Remove stale INTEGRATION_REPORT.md (1388 lines)
in favor of current local/docs/ references. Update AGENTS.md, README,
and docs index to point to the new plan.
New docs/_CUB_RBPKGBUILD_IMPL_PLAN.md with full CUB package builder specification
covering RBPKGBUILD format, CLI commands, build flow, BUR repository, and AUR conversion.
Updated AGENTS.md with pkgutils extensions and CUB integration details.
Updated AMD GPU integration docs with current P2 progress.
ACPI-FIXES.md: Add MADT entry types table (0x0-0xA), update all tables to reflect 17 kernel fixes and 9 userspace fixes, mark crash reports resolved, add compile-time assertions note. Document FADT full parse, power methods, shutdown/reboot.
AGENTS.md: Mark ACPI as Complete in Bare Metal Boot Status table with 4 new rows (shutdown, reboot, power). Strike through P0 in Phased Roadmap. Update Critical Path to show P0 DONE.
Replace all 'rbos'/'RBOS' references with 'redbear'/'Red Bear OS'
across the build system, scripts, docs, and configs. Renamed files:
rbos.ipxe → redbear.ipxe
assets/rbos-icon.png → assets/redbear-icon.png
recipes/system/rbos-info → recipes/system/redbear-info
Added redbear-info: a system tool that enumerates all Red Bear OS
custom components, checks runtime availability via scheme paths and
binary presence, and prints status/test info. Supports --verbose,
--json, and --test output modes. Zero external dependencies.
Derivative of Redox OS (https://www.redox-os.org) adding:
- AMD GPU driver (amdgpu) via LinuxKPI compat layer
- ext4 filesystem support (ext4d scheme daemon)
- ACPI fixes for AMD bare metal (x2APIC, DMAR, IVRS, MCFG)
- Custom branding (hostname, os-release, boot identity)
Build system is full upstream Redox with RBOS overlay in local/.
Patches for kernel, base, and relibc are symlinked from local/patches/
and protected from make clean/distclean. Custom recipes live in
local/recipes/ with symlinks into the recipes/ search path.
Build: make all CONFIG_NAME=redbear-full
Sync: ./local/scripts/sync-upstream.sh
