vasilito a287fe20b9 toolchain: remove the GCC 13 path; document the GCC 16 transition
redbear-ci / check (push) Has been cancelled
Operator decision 2026-08-05: "we will not have gcc 13." The cross
toolchain has been GCC 16.1.0 since the port landed, but the build system
still defaulted to GCC 13 in three places and nothing recorded the move.

Build system:
- mk/prefix.mk: GCC_RECIPE?=gcc13 -> gcc16.
- mk/prefix.mk: the HOSTED_REDOX package rule derives its names from
  $(GCC_RECIPE) instead of hardcoding gcc13.pkgar / gcc13.cxx.pkgar.
  static.redox-os.org publishes no gcc16 package, so that path now fails
  at download. Deliberate: a loud failure beats a wrong compiler.
- build-redbear.sh: refuse to build on a non-GCC-16 toolchain. This is
  the one that mattered on a Linux host. `make prefix` unpacks upstream's
  gcc-install.tar.gz, which IS GCC 13.2.0, and no make rule replaces it --
  GCC 16 arrives only via install-gcc16-toolchain.sh. A fresh prefix
  therefore put you silently back on GCC 13, surfacing ~40 minutes later
  as a kwin C++23 failure. The guard checks all three locations
  (gcc-install, sysroot, ~/.redoxer/<target>/toolchain -- the last has
  highest priority) and names the two scripts to run.

Docs:
- New local/docs/TOOLCHAIN-GCC16.md: why the move (kwin/plasma-workspace
  need std::ranges::to), build/install/rollback procedure, the three
  locations that must agree, the tree-wide -std=gnu17 and -fno-hardened
  consequences, and the open libstdc++ float16-formatter gap that
  currently blocks the kwin link.
- CHANGELOG, docs/README.md index and state summary, and the stale claim
  in NATIVE-TOOLCHAIN-WORKSTREAM.md that gcc13 "still builds the GCC 13
  cross toolchain".

Also corrects stale references found while auditing:
- AGENTS.md described prefix/ as "Clang/LLVM"; it is GCC 16.1.0 + LLVM + Rust.
- AGENTS.md cited local/reference/linux-7.0/ (tree is linux-7.1).
- AGENTS.md's durable-patching example cited a mesa patch that does not
  exist; replaced with one wired in recipe.toml. (The first replacement
  used patch 03, which the changelog records as orphaned -- it targets a
  file removed from Mesa 26.1.4 upstream.)

native_bootstrap.sh still installs gcc13/gcc13.cxx packages inside a
Redox VM. Left alone: that is the deferred gcc-native workstream and no
gcc16 package is published for Redox to point it at.

Verified: bash -n clean; make -n prefix parses; guard accepts the current
16.1.0 toolchain in all three locations and rejects a stubbed 13.2.0.

vasilito 9f2de2a0b1 docs+build: correct version drift, mangled prose, and toolchain-version gaps
Docs:
- Baseline was stated as 0.3.1 across the canonical set while the branch,
  Cat 0/1 crates and every Cat 2 fork are 0.3.2. AGENTS.md also cited a
  sources/redbear-0.3.1/ archive that does not exist; the only archive
  present is sources/redbear-0.1.0/. Versioning examples now match the
  forks as they actually stand (redoxfs/syscall 0.9.1, libredox 0.1.19).
- Repaired 18 instances of 'immutable archived' across 8 documents, where
  a global find/replace had turned sync/synced/archived into that phrase
  and produced ungrammatical text ('never auto-immutable archived',
  '### Source immutable archived').
- Settled the apply-patches.sh contradiction empirically. Both sides were
  wrong: the GROSS WARNING blocks (x5) described it as routine
  patch-linking, and SCRIPT-BEHAVIOR-MATRIX.md said build-redbear.sh
  'never invokes' it. It is invoked at build-redbear.sh:487, but only to
  auto-repair a failed verify-overlay-integrity.sh check.
- Dropped the dangling reference to a local/AGENTS.md section
  'NO OVERLAY-STYLE PATCHES — SCOPED POLICY' that does not exist.

Build system:
- mk/prefix.mk hardcoded 13.2.0 in the limits.h removal, which silently
  no-ops after a toolchain upgrade and leaves the conflicting header.
  Version-globbed.
- Parameterized GCC_RECIPE so the from-source toolchain path is not
  pinned to gcc13.
- The three cstdlib strtold seds were not idempotent -- the shipped GCC
  13 toolchain carried that comment block 17 times from repeated
  'make prefix' runs. Each is now guarded.

vasilito 448800aea9 prefix: propagate AMDGPU/NVPTX host LLVM into the redoxer toolchain
clang-install now cooks host:llvm21 (which carries AMDGPU;NVPTX). rsync its
host LLVM (llvm-config + libs + llvm headers) into ~/.redoxer/toolchain so the
host llvm-config the Mesa build reads reports the amdgpu module (mesa's
dependency('llvm', modules: amdgpu) otherwise fails against the toolchain's
downloaded X86-only LLVM). Mirrors the existing relibc->toolchain propagation;
rsync without --delete preserves the toolchain's gcc/rust/redox-target files.

vasilito de44b9324e feat: build-system resilience (fetch retry, strict cache parse, auto_deps preserve, Tier 1 messages)
Tier 3 code improvements (from BUILD-SYSTEM-ASSESSMENT-2026-07-18 Part 6.2):

- Q2: Add run_command_with_retry() helper with exponential backoff (1s, 2s, 4s).
  Wrap download_wget and git clone with 3 attempts. Git clone closure cleans
  partial tmp dir between retries (git refuses non-empty clone targets).

- Q3: Preserve auto_deps.toml alongside dep_hashes.toml in binary store publish
  (repo_builder.rs). Restore path prefers the preserved copy, falling back to
  declared-depends-only reconstruction only when the preserved copy is absent
  (e.g. published by an older cookbook). Preserves full ELF dynamic dep graph.

- Q4: DepHashes::read now returns Result<Option<Self>, String> discriminating
  'missing' (legitimate first build, fall back to mtime) from 'corrupt' (loud
  WARN + force rebuild). Closes a silent-swallow gap where a corrupt
  dep_hashes.toml produced an incorrect mtime-fallback rebuild.

- Q6: Standardize error reporting in repo.rs nonstop path to {:#} format,
  matching the pattern established in the earlier Tier 1 message commit.

Tier 1 message fixes (remaining items from assessment Part 5.3/5.4):

- M26: build-redbear.sh:569 '30-60 minutes' -> config-dependent range
- A6/A8: Makefile container messages add remediation hint
- B3: mk/config.mk sccache hint adds install guidance
- H2: mk/qemu.mk Unsupported ARCH lists supported values
- mk/redbear.mk comment 'fully-patched' -> 'versioned'

Verification: cargo check 0 errors, cargo test --lib 35/35 passed,
cargo clippy 0 new warnings vs baseline, make -n live + validate clean.

Phase 2 of the build-system assessment:

Tier 1 (user-facing message fixes):
- mk/podman.mk: 'mk/config.mk' -> '.config' (the actual config location)
- mk/prefix.mk: vague 're-run the build' -> specific 'make prefix' guidance
- mk/virtualbox.mk: 'RedBearOS directory' -> 'Red Bear OS VM directory'
- src/bin/repo.rs: '{:?}' -> '{:#}' anyhow chain format + 'repo: ' prefix

Tier 2 (doc consolidation):
- Archive BUILD-SYSTEM-IMPROVEMENTS.md to local/docs/archived/ (self-labeled
  'HISTORICAL POST-MORTEM', no longer current).
- Add local/docs/BUILD-SYSTEM-ASSESSMENT-2026-07-18.md (459-line
  comprehensive assessment: architecture, quality, robustness, gaps).
- docs/README.md: refresh status note (2026-05-01 -> 2026-07-18, v4.0 ->
  v6.0); fix 'as an full fork' grammar.
- docs/07-RED-BEAR-OS-IMPLEMENTATION-PLAN.md: add status header noting
  canonical/secondary split vs CONSOLE-TO-KDE-DESKTOP-PLAN.md; fix grammar.
- HARDWARE.md: remove nonexistent PROFILE-MATRIX.md reference; repoint to
  README.md and the canonical desktop plan.

Verified: cargo check (0 errors), cargo test --lib (35/35 passed),

vasilito c2f5bb09fc feat: build-system hardening (validate gate, cache safeguards, status sync)
Phase 1 remediation of the build-system assessment:

- Makefile: wire 'validate' target into build/live/reimage flows; surface
  lint-config and init-service validators as a first-class gate.
- mk/disk.mk: add 'validate' target running lint-config, init-service
  validator, and file-ownership validator; suppress noisy unmount warnings
  that masked real failures.
- mk/redbear.mk: add source-fingerprint tracking so integrate-redbear.sh
  re-runs when local/recipes, local/Assets, or local/firmware change.
- src/cook/cook_build.rs: atomic dep_hashes.toml write (tmp + rename) to
  prevent torn-write cache corruption; binary-store restore now checks
  dep_hashes before silent restore; fix production bug in
  collect_files_recursive that silently dropped subdirectories whose
  name matched an exclude pattern.
- src/cook/fetch.rs, src/cook/fetch_repo.rs: harden atomic patch
  application and protected-recipe gating.
- AGENTS.md, local/AGENTS.md, local/docs/COLLISION-DETECTION-STATUS.md:
  sync collision-detection status to 'implemented (Phase 15.0)' now that
  CollisionTracker is wired across all four installer layers
  (installer submodule pointer tracked separately in 13cc6fb0c3).

Verified: cargo check (0 errors), cargo test --lib (35/35 passed),
cargo clippy (0 new warnings vs baseline), make -n validate, make -n live.

vasilito b67697918e build: fix fstools host compile path + bison spawn.h cross-compile
fstools.mk: Use canonical local/sources/ paths for installer and redoxfs
cargo install --path. The recipes/ symlink chain caused cargo to resolve
path dependencies (../libredox, ../redoxfs, ../syscall) relative to the
recipe directory instead of the canonical source location, breaking
the host build.

bison: Add cross-compilation cache variables for POSIX spawn support.
Gnulib's configure couldn't detect the system spawn.h during cross-compile,
causing generated lib/spawn.h to omit #include_next, leaving
POSIX_SPAWN_* constants undefined.

vasilito 2382aa496f fix: prefix.mk — patch sysroot+redoxer cstdlib for strtold
Previously only gcc-install was patched. Recipes use sysroot copy
which is a copy of relibc-install (NOT gcc-install), so the cstdlib
strtold fix never propagated to the actual compilation environment.
Patch both sysroot and redoxer toolchain copies.

vasilito 5a542e1cf6 fix: root-cause strtold — patch GCC <cstdlib> at prefix build time
Add explicit #include <stdlib.h> after #include_next <stdlib.h> in
GCC 13 cstdlib. This ensures ::strtold is declared before the
using-directives execute. Previously relibc's declaration was
not visible to the C++ wrapper.

Reverted unjustified ignores: qt6-sensors, kf6-ki18n, kf6-kidletime,
kf6-kwayland, redbear-greeter — per project policy: fix, don't ignore.

Also reverted kf6-ki18n to full build (stub removed).

vasilito 4a1702309d fix: prefix — auto-patch GCC cstdlib strtold on rebuild
GCC 13 cstdlib uses ::strtold but relibc only declares it (no impl).
Remove 'using ::strtold' from C++ stdlib header at prefix build time.

- relibc: update local fork to upstream 99675e2b, switch recipe to path source
- prefix.mk: auto-sync relibc artifacts from sysroot to gcc-install
- script.rs: add prefix sysroot -L to LDFLAGS for correct libc.a resolution
- config.rs: env vars always override cookbook.toml (fix COOKBOOK_OFFLINE bug)
- docs: add UPSTREAM-SYNC-PROCEDURE.md for repeatable fork updates

vasilito 15d0707e74 feat: USB storage read/write proof + full Red Bear OS tree sync
Add redbear-usb-storage-check in-guest binary that validates USB mass
storage read and write I/O: discovers /scheme/disk/ devices, writes a
test pattern to sector 2048, reads it back, verifies match, restores
original content. Updates test-usb-storage-qemu.sh with write-proof
verification step.

Includes all accumulated Red Bear OS work: kernel patches, relibc
patches, driver infrastructure, DRM/GPU, KDE recipes, firmware,
validation tooling, build system hardening, and documentation.

5-phase hardening to prevent silent file-layer collisions (the D-Bus
regression class):

Phase 1: lint-config-paths.sh + make lint-config in depends.mk
Phase 2: CollisionTracker in installer (content-hash comparison)
Phase 3: installs manifests in recipe.toml + validate-file-ownership.sh
Phase 4: validate-init-services.sh + make validate in disk.mk
Phase 5: documentation (AGENTS.md, BUILD-SYSTEM-HARDENING-PLAN.md)

Both redbear-mini and redbear-full build and validate clean.
66 declared install paths in base, zero conflicts.

Release fork infrastructure:
- REDBEAR_RELEASE=0.1.1 with offline enforcement (fetch/distclean/unfetch blocked)
- 195 BLAKE3-verified source archives in standard format
- Atomic provisioning via provision-release.sh (staging + .complete sentry)
- 5-phase improvement plan: restore format auto-detection, source tree
  validation (validate-source-trees.py), archive-map.json, REPO_BINARY fallback

Archive normalization:
- Removed 87 duplicate/unversioned archives from shared pool
- Regenerated all archives in consistent format with source/ + recipe.toml
- BLAKE3SUMS and manifest.json generated from stable tarball set

Patch management:
- verify-patches.sh: pre-sync dry-run report (OK/REVERSED/CONFLICT)
- 121 upstream-absorbed patches moved to absorbed/ directories
- 43 active patches verified clean against rebased sources
- Stress test: base updated to upstream HEAD, relibc reset and patched

Compilation fixes:
- relibc: Vec imports in redox-rt (proc.rs, lib.rs, sys.rs)
- relibc: unsafe from_raw_parts in mod.rs (2024 edition)
- fetch.rs: rev comparison handles short/full hash prefixes
- kibi recipe: corrected rev mismatch

New scripts: restore-sources.sh, provision-release.sh, verify-sources-archived.sh,
check-upstream-releases.sh, validate-source-trees.py, verify-patches.sh,
repair-archive-format.sh, generate-manifest.py

Documentation: AGENTS.md, README.md, local/AGENTS.md updated for release fork model

vasilito 005033aa33 fix: repo count 15→13, stale text, live ISO sources hook
- Fixed repo .pkgar count: 13 (was 15 claimed). Updated all docs.
- Fixed stage-only count: 23 (was 21).
- Removed last stale '9 KF6 reach image' text from bottom line.
- Removed stale '22 additional recipes need enablement' text.
- Live ISO path now depends on 'sources' target (archival parity
  with harddrive.img path).
- All counts now verified against actual repo artifacts.

vasilito 7cc4222180 feat: KDE config 33 packages + source archival in Makefile
- Enabled kirigami (core-only, QML disabled) + kf6-kio (KIOCORE_ONLY)
  in redbear-full.toml (total 33 KDE packages: 31 KF6 + kdecoration +
  kglobalacceld + kwin + kirigami + kf6-kio)
- Plasma packages (framework/workspace/desktop), breeze, kde-cli-tools
  documented as blocked — cookbook dependency resolver bug prevents
  deps (kdecoration, kf6-extra-cmake-modules) from being scheduled
  before dependents. Remaining blockers: kf6-knewstuff/kwallet need
  KF6Attica (not in tree)
- mk/redbear.mk: 'make sources' target archives all fully-patched
  sources; hooked into 'make all' as dependency of harddrive.img
- Removed archive step from build-redbear.sh (now in Makefile)
- 210 source archives generated, 171 packages in manifest

vasilito 24e03c6cb6 Guard make distclean against local/ overlay source deletion
make distclean now documents that local/ is protected and will NOT be deleted. Add make distclean-nuclear as the only path that can touch local overlay sources (requires REDBEAR_ALLOW_LOCAL_UNFETCH=1). Add unfetch risk comments in mk/repo.mk for local overlay recipes.

vasilito 650a70a309 Update installer patch with GRUB help text and fix fstools build
Adds --bootloader and --filesystem to installer help text. Fixes
fstools host build by symlinking local/ directory alongside recipes/
so the ext4-blockdev path dependency resolves correctly.

vasilito 20807a0ebf Add Red Bear OS build integration script and makefile
integrate-redbear.sh is an idempotent overlay setup script: creates symlinks for custom recipes, patches, and configs; stages branding assets and firmware into local recipe sources; writes a tag file for the build system. mk/redbear.mk wires it as a make target with Podman support.

vasilito 43fd088349 Rename rbos → redbear everywhere, add redbear-info system tool
Replace all 'rbos'/'RBOS' references with 'redbear'/'Red Bear OS'
across the build system, scripts, docs, and configs. Renamed files:
  rbos.ipxe → redbear.ipxe
  assets/rbos-icon.png → assets/redbear-icon.png
  recipes/system/rbos-info → recipes/system/redbear-info

Added redbear-info: a system tool that enumerates all Red Bear OS
custom components, checks runtime availability via scheme paths and
binary presence, and prints status/test info. Supports --verbose,
--json, and --test output modes. Zero external dependencies.

vasilito 50b731f1b7 Red Bear OS — microkernel OS in Rust, based on Redox
Derivative of Redox OS (https://www.redox-os.org) adding:
- AMD GPU driver (amdgpu) via LinuxKPI compat layer
- ext4 filesystem support (ext4d scheme daemon)
- ACPI fixes for AMD bare metal (x2APIC, DMAR, IVRS, MCFG)
- Custom branding (hostname, os-release, boot identity)

Build system is full upstream Redox with RBOS overlay in local/.
Patches for kernel, base, and relibc are symlinked from local/patches/
and protected from make clean/distclean. Custom recipes live in
local/recipes/ with symlinks into the recipes/ search path.

Build:  make all CONFIG_NAME=redbear-full
Sync:   ./local/scripts/sync-upstream.sh
