Comprehensive 3D userland plan based on direct code audit of the
Mesa 26.1.4 build, redox-drm Intel backend, virgl runtime path,
amdgpu C port, and libdrm enablement. Seven critical gaps identified
that block all hardware-accelerated 3D rendering on Red Bear OS
beyond llvmpipe fallback:
1. Mesa gallium-drivers=softpipe,llvmpipe,virgl — NO iris, NO crocus,
NO radeonsi. The README/CHANGELOG claim that 'all 6 Red Bear
Mesa patches are wired' is incorrect: only 5 are wired; patches
03 and 06 are orphans because patch 03 targets
src/egl/drivers/dri2/platform_redox.c which does not exist in
Mesa 26.1.4 upstream (the file was removed). Patches 03/06
cannot be cleanly reapplied — they need re-creation against
the current Mesa API.
2. No 'redox' EGL platform in Mesa 26.1.4. EGL_PLATFORM=wayland
resolves to swrast (llvmpipe) on Redox. virgl and iris are
never auto-selected.
3. No Mesa winsys for Redox (src/gallium/winsys/redox/ does not
exist). The virgl driver uses upstream's generic
virgl_drm_winsys which depends on libdrm's redox.patch to
redirect ioctls to scheme:drm.
4. Intel kernel backend supports only Gen9–Gen14 (Meteor Lake).
No Lunar Lake (Xe2, Gen15) device IDs. No Panther Lake (Xe3,
Gen16) device IDs. The display version table stops at 14.
5. No Vulkan built (vulkan-drivers= empty). No anv (Intel), no
radv (AMD), no venus (virtio-gpu Vulkan).
6. The redox_private_cs_submit ABI exists in redox-drm (real
implementation for Intel ring submission with seqno tracking,
space-wait, MI_FLUSH_DW) but no Mesa gallium driver consumes it.
7. The amdgpu C port is display-only (DC modeset, no render/3D).
It does NOT provide a Mesa radeonsi winsys. Stages 2-4 of the
amdgpu recipe are intentionally empty (no Linux TTM/core
source).
The plan file (786 lines) covers:
- Verified code state from direct read (Mesa recipe, Intel
backend, virgl, amdgpu, libdrm)
- Reality-vs-claim corrections (6 overclaims in current docs)
- Hardware-acceleration status table (10 paths)
- 7-phase execution plan with explicit acceptance criteria
for each phase:
Phase 1: Validate current virgl runtime path (1-2 weeks)
Phase 2: Add Lunar Lake and Panther Lake device IDs
Phase 3: Restore the Redox EGL platform (re-create)
Phase 4: Add Intel iris (Gen8-Gen14) — biggest piece, 8-12 weeks
Phase 5: Add AMD radeonsi — 6-8 weeks
Phase 6: Vulkan (enables anv/radv) — 2-4 weeks
Phase 7: Panther Lake kernel driver — 12-16 weeks

- File-level change catalog
- Risk register
- Operating rule: 'code presence is not support; build success
is not support; llvmpipe is not acceleration; an env-override
that requires manual setup is not a runtime path'.
The 8-element block-character ramp in the panel footer's
size-distribution histogram was indexed with a level that could
clamp to 8 (one past the end). The math scaled count/max_bucket to
[0, 8] and clamped with .min(8); for any populated directory the
max bucket always produced level == 8, panicking on the first
render with 'index out of bounds: the len is 8 but the index is 8'.
Replaced the inline arithmetic with a dedicated histogram_level
helper that mirrors the sparkline helper in ops/progress.rs:
scale count/max_bucket to [0, 7] and clamp to 7. The 8-element
array is now a named constant HIST_BLOCK_CHARS so the index
constraint is visible at the use site.
Added five regression tests:
- histogram_level_clamps_to_seven_for_max_bucket: the exact case
- histogram_level_returns_zero_for_empty_input
- histogram_level_monotonic_in_count: levels grow with count
- histogram_level_never_panic_indexes: exhaustive count in [0..max]
for max in [1..256]
- render_panel_does_not_panic_on_populated_directory: end-to-end
size_histogram + histogram_level + array index
Also: render() used to silently skip when the terminal reported
< 10x5, leaving the user with a blank screen and no feedback. It
now logs a one-shot warning to stderr and draws a single-line
yellow-on-black 'Terminal too small' message on the terminal so the
user can resize and continue.
Verified: 1474 lib tests pass (up from 1433), no new clippy warnings,
no panic in populated/empty/normal/tiny terminal scenarios, tlcedit
unaffected.
Per ground-truth: 9 forks exist (the 7 listed + syscall + libredox). Added syscall and libredox to the fork list with a note about how they're wired (Cargo path deps via redox-rt consumers, not via recipes/<comp>/recipe.toml path = ).
POSIX gaps row: "~38 active patches" is stale — relibc now uses PATCHED-VIA-PATH-FORK; the local/patches/relibc/ directory holds reference and archived patches, not active build-time patches.
KDE Plasma / KWin row was conflating two distinct statuses. KWin BUILDS successfully (the redox-drm + Qt6 Wayland patches exist); only the RUNTIME is blocked by the Qt6 Wayland crash. Split into two rows so readers know exactly what works vs what's blocked.

Two additions:
1. local/patches/ tree description now notes orphan-patch
governance (verify-patch-content.sh + decision tree in AGENTS.md).
Operators looking at the patches tree get the pointer to the
audit doc.
2. Documentation list in README.md adds two new doc pointers:
- PATCH-PRESERVATION-AUDIT-2026-07-12.md
- COLLISION-DETECTION-STATUS.md
Operator visibility only — no functional change to governance.
The build system had multiple authoritative docs claiming 'Red Bear
OS 0.1.0 (baseline)' and 'branch 0.2.5' long after the working
branch advanced to 0.3.1. Operator confusion was inevitable:
- 'repo --version' showed 0.2.5 (root Cargo.toml drift, fixed G2)
- AGENTS.md said rust-toolchain = nightly-2025-10-03 (actual
nightly-2026-05-24)
- local/AGENTS.md example versions all said 0.2.5 (should be 0.3.1)
- README.md and docs/* claimed 'baseline 0.1.0' on the current
branch (which has 0.3.1 forks as the source of truth)
This commit syncs the docs to reality without rewriting historical
content where the 0.1.0 reference is genuinely about the legacy
release archive at sources/redbear-0.1.0/ (which DOES exist and
serves the release-mode fallback per BUILD-SYSTEM-SETUP).
The 0.1.0 release-archive references are preserved with explicit
'legacy' annotations because that archive IS the durable record
of the old overlay-patch approach and is used by
restore-sources.sh --release=0.1.0 in fallback build paths.
Updated across:
- AGENTS.md (root): toolchain, current baseline phrasing
- local/AGENTS.md: example versions 0.2.5->0.3.1, RELEASE MODEL
clarified that current source-of-truth is local/sources/ forks
- README.md: branch refs 0.2.5->0.3.1

Replace all non-canonical build invocations (bare 'make all/live
CONFIG_NAME=', 'scripts/build-iso.sh', 'scripts/run.sh') with the
canonical './local/scripts/build-redbear.sh' wrapper.
Updated: AGENTS.md, local/AGENTS.md, README.md, docs/README.md,
docs/06-BUILD-SYSTEM-SETUP.md, and 6 active local/docs plan files.
Archived docs and frozen boot-logs left as-is (historical evidence).
Rewrite the scattered git-server references into a single canonical
section in README.md and a comprehensive operator section in
local/AGENTS.md.
- README.md: new top-level "Our Git Server" section with connection
details table (token field left as placeholder per session-only
token policy).
- local/AGENTS.md: new "OUR GIT SERVER" section covering connection
details, repo map, clone/auth/remote-setup recipes, cookbook
auth via .netrc, push runbook, API quick reference, and a full
operator runbook including credential-recovery and
accidental-commit mitigation.
Tokens are explicitly NOT stored anywhere in tracked files. Clones
and authenticated operations must use credential helper, .netrc,
or REDBEAR_GITEA_TOKEN env var.
Also normalizes the lowercase-slug note (gitea normalizes RedBear-OS
to redbear-os) and the related-repos table.
Top-level + local docs audit (2026-06-18). Findings and fixes:
1. AGENTS.md CONVENTIONS section — corrected 'my-' prefix contradiction.
The legacy 'my-*' prefix is deprecated and git-ignored. Use 'redbear-*'
for tracked first-class configs.
2. README.md quick-start — promoted 'local/scripts/build-redbear.sh' to
the recommended entry point. Bare 'scripts/run.sh --build' remains as
a secondary path. Added note about build-redbear.sh's policy gates
(.config checking, REDBEAR_ALLOW_PROTECTED_FETCH=1).
3. docs/06-BUILD-SYSTEM-SETUP.md — restructured Building section to put
'build-redbear.sh' first, then 'make all' as legacy/advanced with
clear notes on what gates it bypasses.
4. docs/05-KDE-PLASMA-ON-REDOX.md — replaced 'Stub-only package for
dependency resolution' wording for kirigami. Per project policy
(local/AGENTS.md STUB AND WORKAROUND POLICY — ZERO TOLERANCE),
stubs are forbidden. The kirigami build is blocked at the QML gate;
the recipe is honest and ships no fake/fallback package.
5. local/docs/BUILD-TOOLS-PORTING-PLAN.md — replaced all 'python312'
references with 'python314' (matches V8.3 P0 bump from earlier).
6. local/AGENTS.md — added 'LOCAL RECIPE SOURCE IMMUTABILITY' section
documenting the cb8b093564 guarantee. Any path matching
/local/recipes/ is unconditionally immutable; no env var or flag
can override. REDBEAR_ALLOW_LOCAL_UNFETCH=1 was removed as a kill
switch and is now dead code. distclean-nuclear is now a no-op for
local recipes.
- Mesa recipe: re-add patches = ["P4-virgl-redox-disk-cache.patch"]
(was dropped from recipe during iteration)
- README.md: remove links to 4 deleted docs (COMPREHENSIVE-OS-ASSESSMENT,
RELIBC-COMPREHENSIVE, RELIBC-COMPLETENESS, DESKTOP-STACK-CURRENT-STATUS)
- Point to CONSOLE-TO-KDE v4.0 as the single canonical plan
Platform prerequisite status:
- Qt6::Sensors: BUILT (v6.11.0, 520KB pkgar, dummy backend)
- libinput: BUILT (v1.30.2, with libevdev v1.13.2 + linux-input-headers)
- QML/Quick JIT: still disabled on Redox (blocks real KWin binary,
kirigami, plasma-framework)
KWin: now attempts real cmake build with Sensors + libinput deps
enabled. Falls back to redbear-compositor shim on cmake failure
(QML/Quick gate). Previously kwin was pure stub — now it's a
bounded build attempt with fallback.
Enabled in config (new this session):
- qt6-sensors, libevdev, libinput, kdecoration, kf6-kcmutils
Previously OOTB dependencies now resolved:
- libevdev → libinput → KWin real build path opened
- linux-input-headers → libevdev → libinput chain
- qt6-sensors → KWin Sensors dependency satisfied
Consolidate compile target naming (redbear-live, redbear-grub-live-full,
etc.), add config/redbear-grub-live-full.toml, make redbear-live-full-grub
a legacy alias, update build-iso.sh to support all GRUB live targets, and
sync AGENTS.md/README.md build command documentation.
Consolidate the active desktop path around redbear-full while landing the greeter/session stack and the runtime fixes needed to keep Wayland and KWin bring-up moving forward.
Add channel/band/rate/BSS/RX-TX structures to linux-kpi wireless
scaffolding (mac80211.rs, wireless.rs, net.rs, C headers), extend
redbear-iwlwifi linux_port.c with comprehensive PCIe transport, and
create consolidated CONSOLE-TO-KDE-DESKTOP-PLAN.md as the canonical
desktop path document. Remove stale INTEGRATION_REPORT.md (1388 lines)
in favor of current local/docs/ references. Update AGENTS.md, README,
and docs index to point to the new plan.
New docs/_CUB_RBPKGBUILD_IMPL_PLAN.md with full CUB package builder specification
covering RBPKGBUILD format, CLI commands, build flow, BUR repository, and AUR conversion.
Updated AGENTS.md with pkgutils extensions and CUB integration details.
Updated AMD GPU integration docs with current P2 progress.
Replace all 'rbos'/'RBOS' references with 'redbear'/'Red Bear OS'
across the build system, scripts, docs, and configs. Renamed files:
rbos.ipxe → redbear.ipxe
assets/rbos-icon.png → assets/redbear-icon.png
recipes/system/rbos-info → recipes/system/redbear-info
Added redbear-info: a system tool that enumerates all Red Bear OS
custom components, checks runtime availability via scheme paths and
binary presence, and prints status/test info. Supports --verbose,
--json, and --test output modes. Zero external dependencies.
Derivative of Redox OS (https://www.redox-os.org) adding:
- AMD GPU driver (amdgpu) via LinuxKPI compat layer
- ext4 filesystem support (ext4d scheme daemon)
- ACPI fixes for AMD bare metal (x2APIC, DMAR, IVRS, MCFG)
- Custom branding (hostname, os-release, boot identity)
Build system is full upstream Redox with RBOS overlay in local/.
Patches for kernel, base, and relibc are symlinked from local/patches/
and protected from make clean/distclean. Custom recipes live in
local/recipes/ with symlinks into the recipes/ search path.
